A picturesque waterfall spills below Eagle Creek Hot Springs.

THE HOT SPRINGS

Eagle Creek Hot Springs are one of the more difficult to find in this book. Their isolated location and the fact that they are on the side of an extremely steep hill make them inaccessible to the casual tourist.

The springs emanate from the hillside and the hot water is contained in two small grottos. One of these grottos is a mine shaft, representing an attempt to extract ore from this area. The timbers of this mine are still in existence. The miners who dug this hole may have been attracted to the area because of the hot spring water, as it is often a telltale sign of valuable minerals. The second grotto appears to be natural, and is smaller than the other. Both grottos offer unusual bathing experiences, as you must actually get inside the grotto to experience the water. To reach the second spring, (the one higher up the hill), some contorting and ducking is required. The water in both is approximately 95 degrees and makes for a pleasant bath, if you can fit.

Be extremely careful on this hillside, as the spring water makes the ground quite slippery in places. Another, older trail accesses the springs from above, but this trail also requires some steep climbing and really does not offer any advantages over scrambling up the hillside. Keep in mind also that this is private property, and it has only been through the permission of the owner that this spring is open to public access. Hopefully this condition will continue, but if people are careless, there are no guarantees. Pack out all trash, and obey all signs.

Once again, the beautiful scenery provided by the surrounding terrain makes visiting this spring an enjoyable outdoor experience. When the sun angle is just right, the red and beige rocks of Eagle Creek Canyon give off a soft glow that is peaceful and mesmerizing. Do take the time to enjoy this great countryside when you are visiting Eagle Creek Hot Springs.

The hot springs are located on land owned by the Freeport McMoran Company. Near the springs is the corporation’s pumping plant, where water from the Black River is pumped to Eagle Creek and then to Morenci for use in the mines.
